My advice is work hard and try to get a full-time regular position, because it is much more helpful in the long run, instead of moving from temp-job to temp-job under a consultant for slave wages.A word of advice - AVOID CONSULTANCIES AT ALL COSTS!!!?
Which labour market are you referring to with those stats?
Typically in the niche of the technology field I work in. You'll see independant contractors making about 30-40% more than the permanent full-time employee.
This is normal as a full time employee has less risk than a contractor and therefore a contractor needs a premium on their time.
As to a consulting firm. more is expected from them since their billable is higher. Its normal for comp to be about 40% of annual billings for an experienced consultant.
The slave wages you're referring to might be for an H1B. Again there's a value proposition there... indentured servitude for a number of years with the hope of a green card.A word of advice - AVOID CONSULTANCIES AT ALL COSTS!!!?
the consultancies have lots of expenses above the money they pay to people who work for them - they have to cover payroll taxes, unemployment taxes, benefits, office rent and overhead, support staff salaries, costs of finding work in which they can then hire you - if you've never owned a business or done accounting work for one, you can't possibly understand all the costs involved. without them to hire you - you'd probably be unemployed, so feel lucky you get any work thru them. I got my last 4 permanent jobs starting out as a temp. I am now a corporate controller and make great money
You are being royally screwed..
I've been a contractor / Consultant for twelve years now, and in that time, I've never made less than twice what a permanent member of staff in the same position makes..
Currently I'm working as a Network Project Engineer on a UK-wide project for a small retail company.. The two permies who work 'with' me make around 拢14 p.h. (+pension etc) where I make 拢35 p.h. (+expences).. My consulting agency makes 15% on top, so my client pays about 拢40 p.h. for me..
(Feel free to double these amounts to convert to U$D)
Sounds like you're either indentured or slaved.. either way there's something wrong there.
You are partly correct !. But then the field reality is that even renowned IT companies, who pay fat salaries are surviving on outsourcing ( BPO companies). They pocket a huge sum after charging a heavy amount as employees compensation , but pay only 24% to the employees !!
you should work hard , full time work is more profit.
