I was at my cousin's house and he was being rude to one of his little sisters [the oldest one of the two]. A few minutes later The oldest girl was being mean to the younger one. He jumped in and said Don't be mean to my little sister. I chirped in and said aren't you being hypocritical when you're telling her not to be mean to her little sister but you're being mean to your little sister? He then told me that the correct word would be contradiction, and I told him yes that word will work too. We then had an argument for a few moments, and he said that Contradiction and Hypocrisy aren't the same thing. I told him that I believe they are the same thing to a certain extent.
So I must ask did I use the word Hypocritical out of context?Did I use this word out of context? {Advice/Help Needed}!?
The word ';contradiction'; would apply to comparing facts or ideas; the
word ';hypocritical'; would be a moral judgment of a person. While the
meanings are somewhat similar, your usage of the word ';hypocritical';
is the correct one in this particular context.Did I use this word out of context? {Advice/Help Needed}!?
You have used the word hypocritical exactly correctly:
A show or expression of feelings or beliefs one does not actually hold or possess: pharisaism, phoniness, sanctimoniousness, sanctimony, tartuffery, two-facedness. See honest/dishonest.
Your cousin has used the word contradiction incorrectly.
1. The condition of being in conflict: antagonism, antithesis, contradistinction, contraposition, contrariety, contrariness, opposition, polarity. See support/oppose.
2. A refusal to grant the truth of a statement or charge: denial, disaffirmance, disaffirmation, disclaimer, negation, rejection. Law traversal. See affirm/deny/argue.
No it was hypocritical but he was contradicting himself. :)
You used the word in the proper context.
