I am getting a puppy great dane in 2 weeks, any words of advice or preparations???

Read up on them as much as you can. They unfortunately have a lot of health problems, so read as much as you can so you can quickly recognize it if a problem arises.

One of the most common problems is bloat (a painful distending and twisting of the stomach) is a but critical condition that affects Great Danes and results rapidly in death if not quickly addressed.

When the dog is an adult take care that it does not become overweight as that will put pressure on it's hips, which are already prone to hip displaysia.

At about middle age I would start it on Glucosamine Chondriotin, as preventative measure to slow down the arthritis it's sure to develop.

Also the puppy's do a lot of growing their first couple of years, so high quality puppy food is especially important. Because of all this growth, their bones are softer and prone to injury, care should be taken and their should be no forced exercise the first two years.

Have fun!I am getting a puppy great dane in 2 weeks, any words of advice or preparations???
Yes, get a bigger houseI am getting a puppy great dane in 2 weeks, any words of advice or preparations???
They are the GREATEST! Never broke a thing in our house and we live in a 14x80 mobile home, did tear a magazine up. Have a fenced in yard and give him lots of love and attention and they will return it 100 times over. Great Protectors. They are a one person dog, or at least mine was. Loved her dearly.
Haha, I LOVE skizsrodt's answer. I would puppy proof your house by putting away anything that is breakable that the dog can reach and anything of value that you don't want chewed up. But a Kong, a couple of nylabones and a couple of soft toys for your new pooch. You are going to probably want to invest in some bitter apple, a taste deterrent. I am sure it will be chewing on your woodwork eventually.

I highly suggest you crate train your dog; this is the dogs private area to get away from it all. He or she probably won't like it at first, but in the end of the training it will be worth it. Also, go to doggie obedience classes. With a dog of that size, you don't want the dog to be pulling you around; you need to be in charge unless you like bruises and bumps!!! GOod luck and have fun!!!
hello! yea I think that you should start getting prepared for the puppy like for example a big bed big dog bowls and big toys which supposed to be hard you will be very lucky to get one! well that's my answer oh and teach him/her not to dig because when they dig its not pretty! well bye
puppy proof your house!!
Whore it out to industry as soon as possible, explotation is quite a market.
congrats! i have 4!. i highly reccommend a doggie door and a fenced in yard!! also creat the pup the very first night. thats his bed b/c it will also serve as his ';den'; when your out of the house. always his happy place never a punishment place. very important. and also great danes are the MOST sensitive breed there is. put lots of toys and chews in the creat too.i like nutro's lamb and rice. it has linatone for shiny coat and great skin. and less poo.! e-me if you want to dane chat.
When training a puppy. Spray viegar on your carpet. For some reason they won't pee where vinegar has been sprayed. This really works. I use vinegar, water, and fragrance oil in a spray bottle and spray all over my house. Smell lasts a long time. Vinegar eliminates odor. Good luck with your puppy.
Good on you for asking this, there is much to prepare.
Buy a van and start solving strange mysteries in local villages.
be ready to go on strolls and to play tug of war with chew toy have strong arms for fetch and have free time and have plenty of treats, toys and a large kennel. Great danes cane get big hope that helps
Get the feed the vet tells you to get, they have to grow slow or they get a lot of joint problems.

And for some reason, Great Danes will sometimes spontaneously and without any reason invert their spleen and it ruptures. Only breed of dog to do it. I found out the hard way with my old Dane. Found him lying in the yard pale and faint, he was bleeding internally. Vet got him fixed but barely, and a huge vet bill. He told me the Danes just do that, no one knows why.

Oh, and take all your lower level glassware away, his tail will knock it all off the shelves.. :)
