Used Jeep Grand Cherokee: any words of advice? Good idea? Bad idea? Recalls? Warranty issues? Advice?

Well I'll give you my opinion. Jeep Grand Cherokee's (in particular 200-2005s) are complicated SUV's, but they have to be to have a high level of performance, and are prone to some types of failures. But all cars are prone to certain failures. I've had to fix some stuff on my 2000 since I got it (Brake Rotors in particular go out often) . But i've never driven a car that was better in bad weather- dirt roads, ice, snow, mud, you name it- and still a nice smooth ride on the pavement. I have the I-6 4.0 L engine and with good tires and keeping it well maintained I get around 18 mpg city and 20 highway. Fits four or even five people and cargo good and I can even tow more than I thought. With the whole gas-price panic these days Jeep Grand's are going really really cheap. So if you are willing to spend the money to keep it running right- i think you won't be disapointed, however if you are not into maintaining a car properly and never want to fix anything, and drive mostly in the city without snow you might want to look at something a little softer. Where I live I have to have something that can handle snow, mud and ice most of the year so for me it's the perfect combo of toughness and smooth city driver. I have owned ten Jeep Cherokees. Some Grand some not so. I would look for one with service records and once yours, use synthetic oil. I would expect a long engine life but you may be annoyed by the trim/interior things.

You should be able to get a steal in this economy and everyone dumping SUVs. Stash the savings for a rainy day (repairs)

what year are you looking at. 99-04 i like but older is also good(i dont like 05 and newer). i love jeeps and we have owned many. right now we have 3 04 GC's and they have about 60,000miles each no major problems. my dads 4.7 v8 and mine get around 14-16mpg city and my best is 20mpg highway @70mph. my moms 4.0 6 cylinder gets about14-17mpg city and 20-24highway. you can go on to jeep.com and look at recalls. my 04 only has 1 and thats the heated seats. we had a 95 4.0 GC we sold it with 190,000miles no major problem. we also had a 01 4.7 GC sold it with 130,000miles no major problems. they are great in the winter. the only thing i dont like about our 04's are the 4x4 drive it works very well but you can't choose when to put it in. it will only kick in once the tires start to slip. its all around a good suv
I have a 2002 GC Laredo that I bought in March. It's got an inline 6 cyl, which was the same engine that was in the 99 Cherokee we had that finally croaked after 256K miles.

So far so good. Rides great, very capable in ice and snow, roomy and comfortable. I get about 20mpg city, about 24 mpg highway. I really like this truck.

Check out this site - It's got some really informative recall info for varying years.
